POSITION TITLE: Road Safety Transportation Planner
REPORTS TO: Deputy Director
STATUS: 40 hours weekly, exempt
SALARY: $60k – $75,000 annually
LOCATION: Hybrid (Onsite and Remote)
Position Summary
Under direction of the Region Nine Development Commission Deputy Director, and working alongside the Transportation Planner, the Road Safety Transportation Planner will lead efforts to create a regional comprehensive road safety action plan for RNDC’s nine county service area, pursuant to the standards set by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
This position will also assist the Transportation Planner in executing RNDC’s annual planning grant with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Maintain strong positive working relationships with elected officials and local units of government; working with local governments to obtain an official commitment to either eliminate or heavily reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
- Coordinate and facilitate committee/task force groups for local oversight of the comprehensive road safety action plan.
- Research and analyze data relevant to crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries within local jurisdictions.
- Engage and collaborate with the public and relevant stakeholders, including the private sector and community groups.
- Utilize inclusive and representative processes in developing the safety action plan. This includes identifying underserved communities in the plan area and ensuring that these populations are not disproportionately impacted by proposed projects and strategies.
- Assess existing policies, plans, guidelines, and other resources to identify opportunities to improve how processes prioritize transportation safety.
- Identify a comprehensive set of projects and strategies to increase safety for all road users. The projects and strategies should consider data, best practices, stakeholder input and equity. This includes providing timeframes for implementation of projects and strategies should also be included.
- Create a transparent method to measure progress over time after the comprehensive road safety action plan is developed.
- Assist the transportation planner in Area Transportation Partnership (ATP) involvement, Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) duties, regional and statewide planning efforts, and attend quarterly RDO transportation planner meetings.
- Other duties as assigned/necessary to achieve program requirements.
Qualifications
- Four-year degree in planning, public administration, geography, or related field is preferred.
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Experience with Microsoft Office required and ArcGIS experience preferred.
- Knowledge and ability to interpret local, state, and federal ordinances or statutes.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills. Must be able to write and speak English fluently and follow the plain language initiative.
- Ability to organize and facilitate meetings/outreach events.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Availability for occasional evening meetings and travel outside normal working hours.
